Anatel (Agência Nacional de Telecomunicaes) published on Tuesday a rule that would oblige mobile phone operators to offer their customers the option of no longer receiving advertisements via SMS.
Between July 20 and September 20, all operators must send a message to consumers with the following text: “By determination of Anatel, if you do not want to receive an advertising message from this provider, send free SMS with the word EXIT”.
If the customer no longer wants to receive the advertisements, the customer will receive a new message as a reply: “Message received successfully. From now on, you will no longer receive advertising messages from this provider”.
From now on, advertising messages can only be sent legally if the user wants to receive them. Anatel’s measure aims to change a common practice of operators, which usually include the receipt of advertisements as a contractual obligation.
