After 13 years, the music industry grows again thanks to digital

For the first time since 1999, the phonographic market has managed to grow worldwide, and this has only happened thanks to the rise of the digital movement. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which brings together 1,400 industry members in 66 countries, released an annual survey that reveals the importance of services such as downloading and streaming for the sector.

There was a 0.3% increase in revenues in 2012, reaching US $ 16.5 billion. The most expressive growth refers to digital sales, which, by increasing 9%, to US $ 5.6 billion, now represent 34% of the amounts collected by those who work with music.

Download sales grew 12% and today are equivalent to 70% of what is considered digital music. The number of people paying to use subscription services also grew (44%), reaching 20 million – this segment represented 10% of digital revenues in 2012.

And growth is expected to continue in the coming years, as has been happening. To give you an idea, in 2011, only 23 countries had companies that sell music via download or streaming; today there are more than 100.
