27% of the Brazilian population has pay TV

THE Anatel reported on Thursday, 28, that the pay TV segment in Brazil grew 1.93% in January compared to December. In this period, there were an increase of 312.2 thousand new connections.

In total, the sector closed the month with 16.5 million subscriptions. This represents about 53 million Brazilians or 27% of the population with access to paid channels, considering the IBGE data of 3.2 people per household.

The combined operations of Net and Embratel, companies of the Mexican group Amrica Mvil, totaled 8.64 million subscriptions in January, 144 thousand more than in the previous month.

The Sky / DirecTV group has grown its base by 106 thousand subscribers over the last month of 2012, reaching 5.14 million connections.

Oi consolidated itself in third place in January with 792 thousand connections, an increase of almost 6% in its subscriber base.

Telefnica already had a net loss of customers and closed the first month of 2013 with 568 thousand accesses, a decrease of 1.5% in relation to December.

Finally, GVT, from the French media and telecommunications group Vivendi, grew by 26 thousand accesses, reaching the mark of 451 thousand subscriptions.
