China threatens to block news apps

The government of China has launched a major offensive against companies that own applications that provide news services, threatening to punish them and ban their products if they do not comply with local legislation.

In a statement echoed by Reuters, the State Internet Information Office stated that these apps spread rumors and false news, in addition to containing “pornography and obscene information” that would harm young people’s mental and physical health.

Some of the applications are responsible for bringing to the Chinese news of publications banned in the country, as in the New York Times. According to the government, it was necessary to take steps to “maintain order on the spread of news on the mobile internet”.
