Pixar to release software used in movies

Pixar is now offering the free version of the Renderman software, which produces the visual effect of the animation films of the stadium and many other Hollywood blockbusters.

To download the program, which is compatible with Windows, OS X and Linux, Pixar requires the interested party to sign up for a forum account and provide a valid e-mail address. Once this is done, the user receives an installation package that downloads the appropriate software and components for their operating system, in addition to the 3D package.

There is, however, a barrier: Renderman software needs support for 3D modeling, like Autodesk Maya, which can cost thousands of dollars. The most popular free 3D application on the market, Blender, is not yet compatible.
